About Us

A Personal Letter From The Owner

For 2000 years Exeter has been at the centre of Devon's history, placed as it is on the river Exe , from which one can reach the North Coast on the famous Tarka train line , or by bus , or train to Exmouth on the South Coast , which is only 8 miles away .

It is the gateway to both the Dartmoor and Exmoor National Parks , which are both exceptional nature habitats .
Raffles is lucky enough to be in the heart of the city ,being 5 minutes walk from the High Street , and 10 to it's modern University.
We have our own car park , which includes a charging point for electric cars , including Tesla .

We have been awarded 4 stars by the English Tourist Board , therefore all rooms are en-suite , with flat screen televisions , WiFi and Amazon Prime time for your enjoyment .

We include a few little luxuries like ear plugs , though the traditional replacement PVC sash windows are virtually sound proof , but it is in case your fellow traveller snores.

The owner , Richard Hyde has lived here for 44 years, spent many years in the Antiques Trade, and the property has many artefacts from those days, including a collection of Campaign furniture dating from 1760 to 1914 , from the days of the Empire .

But it is not confined to the past, and as an example, houses a collection of prints painted by Bob Dylan.

Breakfast is cooked between 7.30 am and 9.30 am , at a time of your choosing, with a menu on the table.
We cater for most tastes , but some would need prior notice , for example : 24 hrs notice for Haddock or Kippers.

If you would like a continental breakfast delivered to  your room , please give twenty four hours notice.

Vegetarians welcome , as are vegans and gluten free.

Richard at 76 is lucky enough to have a Manageress, who is very efficient , and his son Jonathan who is a great help in making your stay at Raffles as pleasurable as we can .

I forgot to mention the garden , which you are welcome to use .

Enough said , as I leave you to look at the photographs .

Raffles has been described as quirky , but I am inclined to view this as a compliment !
